What is ATTMA Airtightness Training?
-
Air permeability refers to the rate at which air passes through the building envelope due to pressure differences. It is a key factor in energy efficiency, moisture control, and indoor air quality. Lower air permeability means better airtightness, reducing heat loss, condensation risks, and energy costs.
-
A blower door test is used to measure a building's air leakage by creating pressure differences using a calibrated fan. The test identifies leaks, drafts, and weak points in the building envelope that need sealing.
-
Residential blower door tests typically involve a single fan setup and are used to measure air changes per hour (ACH50). Commercial buildings often require multiple fans due to larger volumes and are measured using air permeability (q50) to ensure compliance with building regulations.
-
In New Zealand, airtightness testing is increasingly recognised for energy efficiency and compliance. While blower door testing is not yet a mandatory requirement, it is included in Homestar ratings and Passive House standards.
